Structure-property relations in metallosupramolecular polymers

We study the mechanical properties and stimuli-responsiveness of polymers in which dynamic metal-ligand interactions serve as a reversible supramolecular motif.

This experimental research program seeks to develop a better understanding for the structure-property relations of metallopolymers formed by the supramolecular polymerization of telechelic ditopic ligands with various metal salts. This approach affords materials that combine ease of processing with good mechanical properties. In a systematic study, we explore how the nature and the length of the telechelic building block, the ligand motif, and the nature of the metal salt influence the morphology and mechanical properties of metallosupramolecular polymers. We also exploit the dynamic nature of metal-ligand interactions, which bestows these materials with stimuli-responsiveness widening their application possibilities.
