Ultra Small Angle

Ultra small angle setup for rheo-optic measurements

We have designed a CCD camera based light scattering setup to perform simultaneous static and dynamic measurements at ultra small angles (0.45° - 8.5°), which corresponds to scattering vectors in the range 800cm-1 - 15000cm-1.

The setup is particularly useful in studying slow dynamic systems where interesting dynamics often occurs at length scales as large as several microns. For enhanced statistical accuracy of measurements, we use multispeckle detection using a CCD camera instead of a photomultiplier tube used in traditional DLS experiments. The correlation function of the light scattered from the sample is obtained using a multitau software correlator. At present, the setup is being used to investigate phase separation and structural evolution in biopolymer mixtures, for the characterization of the size distribution of large colloidal particles and for the time resolved investigation of cluster formation in colloidal suspensions and the subsequent gel formation, gel structure and dynamics.
